Offenses that are not federal and do not warrant direct state intervention usually begin their judiciary process at the local district courts. These include civil cases not amounting over $12,000, landlord-tenant disputes, and traffic court.

In Pottstown and the surrounding areas, these cases are heard by the local District Court of Pottstown. It is located at 2093 E. High Street, Pottstown PA 19464.It is one of the 30 magisterial courts that comprises the Montgomery County district court system.

Because it is located in Montgomery County, this court is part of the 38th Judicial District for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is presided over by the Hon. Edward C Kropp Sr.

Numbered #38-1-12, this court is open Monday through Friday during the hours of 9:15-5:15. Besides having jurisdiction over the town of Pottstown, it also is the district court for Lower Pottsgrove Township.

The majority of cases heard at this location are traffic hearings.

The Court of Common Pleas for Montgomery County is located at 2 East Airy Street, Norristown PA 19401. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30-4:30. Besides being the seat of the Court of Common Pleas, it also is the location of the Office of the District Attorney and the Office of the Public Defender.

Keir Bradford-Grey serves as the public defender of Montgomery County and is available by telephone at (610) 278-3295. The Office of the Public Defender is found on the second floor of the courthouse.
